In 1998 I was going to invest my £1800 student loan in Apple stock. I spent it on beer and a new Hi-Fi. What a sound investment that was.

The new way that Apple will be reporting on the sales figures for the Apple TV and iPhone means that they can add new features without charging for them. Big hoopla on the phone that’s not even out yet, however, the Apple TV is an interesting one. What functionality will they unlock? I know that hackers have been playing merry hell with it as it stands but what treats does apple have in store? Hmmm interesting….
I did like the way Peter and Tim dodged the only really good question. Referring to the lowering of revenue expectations for the June quarter Apple said this was due to the historic increase in K-12 market in this time span. K-12 customers buy lower price items and often with a discount from Apple itself. Also, they dropped the price of the monitors.
Toni Sacconaghi - Sanford Bernstein asked why this was so. Surely the K-12 market buy-up happens every year? Why are they taking it into account this year?
Answer: That is true erm, swerve, dodge,
I think they’re going to drop the price of something or launch something cheap next quarter. Then again I’m probably totally wrong about that.

And They Said the Mac Was Intuitive
by Matthew Bookspan
Apr 10, 2007Well, it definitely isn’t in one regard. I was able to delete my usr (Unix) folder. Yes, my usr folder. How did this happen? Well, one of the programs I installed caused this lovely little Unix hidden folder to become exposed. Knowing that I already have a Users folder and the multiple Library folder(s), it seemed reasonable to delete it.
Well yes Matthew the Mac is so intuitive it hides the files you shouldn’t delete. Unless, of course, you install a third party application to show them. Dullard.

[UPDATE] Comment no. 115 - very funny

When I do a cmd-F on this page I don’t find the word “muppet” anywhere. This is clearly an oversight and one which I’m now remedying.
But seriously:
Before you delete a folder, open it to see what’s in there.
The sheer volume of stuff in usr/ should have been a bit of a giveaway. They would have included some files with very hairy-looking names, quite a lot of files called applesomethingorother, and modification dates corresponding to the day your OS was installed - or earlier.

We’ve just bought seasons 1 - 5 of Family Guy on DVD. I think it’s fantastic.

Y’see the thing is things keep going wrong with the blog and that’s why it’s probably a bit wonky right now. On top of that I’m busier than ever. Which is good and bad. Mostly good.
Hopefully normal service will be resumed soon. In the meantime here’s something for those of you that watched ITV’s sports coverage in the late 1990s.
Lord, I’ve tried the best I can
I’ve asked everybody in Kazakhstan
but I still don’t understand
Bob Wilson – anchorman.I’ve been to Kent, Gwent and Senegal
I’ve even been to look for Jim Rosenthal
Found him on his knees at the Wailing Wall, crying
Bob Wilson – anchorman.Well I marvel at the things we find beneath the ground
And that man can go faster than the speed of sound
But I still can’t get my head around
Bob Wilson – anchorman.I’m cold and I’m hungry and I’m in Dundalk
I’ve got no bus fare; I’ve got to walk
It’s raining soup and I’ve got a fork
Where be my camper van?Well I’d like to meet Stephenson, the engineer
And I’d like to meet Faraday and buy him a beer
And I’d love to meet the bloke who had the bright idea of
Bob Wilson – anchorman.
